An amendment to the Labeling Directive (2003/89/EC) requires the mandatory inclusion on food labels of the following allergenic ingredients and their derivatives: cereals containing gluten, fish, crustaceans, egg, peanut, milk and dairy products (including lactose), nuts, celery, mustard, sesame seeds and sulphites. This legalisation will come into force on 25th November 2004.The EFSA Scientific Panel on Dietitic Products, Nutrition and Allergies has recently published an opinion relating to the evaluation of allergenic foods for labelling purposes which concludes that thresholds for allergens cannot be set and that all derivatives of the above ingredients will have to be labelled unless satisfactory scientific evidence to the contrary is provided on a case by case basis.
