The Food Standards Agency have reported the results of a survey on erucic acid in

pickles, sauces and preserved vegetables imported from parts of Bangladesh, China, Pakistan and India, in which illegal levels were found in over 10% of products

Erucic acid is a natural component found in some oils derived from plants, primarily in some varieties of mustard seed oil and rapeseed oil. Products with excessively high levels include varieties of preserved chilli beans, mango pickle and minced green chilli paste.

There have been no confirmed reports of erucic acid causing health problems in humans, although tests in animals have shown that this chemical can cause reversible fatty deposits in the heart.

RHM Technology can offer a testing service for this chemical. Please contact us for further details.
